MAJOR OCCASIONS/FESTIVAL

Undoubtedly, every community in Ghana has it own major occasions and festivals they observe so as the people of Gomoa Tarkwa. The minor but undoubtedly the most important occasion is Ahobaa Ketsewa. This is a time to remember and honour Egya Ahor who offered himself to be sacrificed in pursuit to cure and eradicate a pandemic which had fallen the people of Gomoa. The severity of the said disease is equivalent to today’s Covid-19, Ebola and other deadly pandemics.

Indeed, every Family Head (Ebusuapanyin) around this time attach merit to this event and so many travel from their villages, hamlets and other places of work just to come and observe this important occasion.

Next on the occasion is Ahobaa Kɛse. This is an occasion that has a direct cultural anticident to Ahobaa Ketsewa. It is a period where it is believed to be the Final Funeral Rites of Egya Ahor and also merry making thus victory over the deadly and incurable pandemic.

However, there has been some form of amendments in modern day celebration of Ahobaa Kɛse. We now see more of merry making and a moment of mobilising funds for Developmental Projects. It is also a moment of reunion of friends and families who have been apart for years.

Another occasion has to do with what is dubbed “Gomoa One Month”. This is also known as “Gomoa One Week and Two Weeks” in other Gomoa Communities.

It is a period where a number of funerals which were accumulated in the just gone by year are jointly observed in the last weekend of January (New Year).
